If you are recovering from injury, you may be concerned about worsening any pre-existing pains through exercise. However, incorporating the right type of physical activity can make a positive difference in your journey to rehabilitation. Pilates, with its low-impact and gentle (yet highly effective) approach, is a wonderful choice for those recovering from an injury. Throughout this article, we’ll explore the various reasons why Pilates can be such an incredible tool in your journey to rehabilitation.
One of the primary benefits of Pilates in rehabilitation is its focus on core strength. As your body’s foundation, it is vital you maintain core strength after an injury. Why? Weak core muscles will cause your body to depend on other passive structures, such as your ligaments, potentially resulting in tears and worsening the injury you have. A strong core, however, provides the stability needed to support your spine and joints, as well as reduce strain on other muscles. With Pilates, you can rebuild strength and support around injured areas, contributing to a fast and safe recovery.
Chronic pain can be one of the biggest challenges in exercise recovery. Fortunately, Pilates can play an effective role in pain management, due to its focus on slow, gentle, and controlled movements. Unlike high-impact or strenuous forms of exercise (like lifting heavy weights), which can exacerbate pain and cause further injury, Pilates emphasises low-impact exercises that are easy on the joints and muscles.
This makes it ideal for individuals with chronic pain conditions, as it allows them to build strength and flexibility without triggering pain flare-ups. The proof is in the studies, which have shown that in patients with chronic lower-back pain, Pilates contributed to significant improvement in pain relief.
One of the greatest features of Pilates is its adaptability. Exercises can be modified to suit various fitness levels and physical limitations, making it an ideal choice for rehabilitation. This is because the main piece of equipment used in Pilates classes, the Reformer, was designed for adjustability. The Reformer uses springs that can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the level of difficulty, so the intensity of exercises in Pilates can be tailored to individual needs. This is particularly beneficial for those recovering from injury, as they can start with lighter resistance and gradually increase it as they build strength.
Also, the Reformer allows for gradual and controlled progression, reducing the risk of overexertion and injury. Exercises can be adjusted to be more or less challenging, enabling individuals to start with basic movements and advance to more complex ones as they gain strength and confidence.
Proper alignment and posture are also critical components of injury recovery. Misalignments and poor posture can contribute to pain and impede recovery, whereas correct posture minimises strain on the body by maintaining muscle and skeletal balance. This state of balance protects the body’s supporting structures, preventing damage while standing, lying down, and sitting.
Pilates emphasises correct body alignment and encourages mindful movement patterns, helping individuals become more aware of their posture and body mechanics. Through targeted exercises, Pilates corrects imbalances and promotes proper alignment, alleviating pain and preventing further injury. For example, patients with scoliosis or other spinal conditions benefit from exercises like Pilates that promote spinal elongation and balanced muscle engagement, leading to improved posture and reduced discomfort.
Reputable Pilates classes are led by trained, professional instructors. This means you have someone trustworthy to support and correct you if you are performing a movement in a way that may cause or worsen injuries.
Having a knowledgeable professional by your side can also alleviate any fears you may have about exacerbating your condition, as you can trust that you are in capable hands. This reassurance can increase your confidence, allowing you to focus on your rehabilitation without the constant worry of making things worse.
