Pilates Teacher Training Academy
It has been an exciting few months at The Pilates Movement and as always lots going on, however it is particularly exciting with the launch of our Teacher Training Academy. There are quite a few reasons why we launched the Academy, I am a great believer of ‘hands on’ learning, more so with Reformer education where the very feel of the machine and the tension/resistance is absolutely paramount to being a successful teacher. You just can’t learn that online.
After recruiting and working with countless new instructors over the years I would often see them unprepared to start teaching, knowing an array of exercises but not confidently knowing how to structure them together into a smooth flowing modern class. Sometimes not knowing how to teach a class aimed at a certain level. A lot were also amazing, there are some excellent training providers out there! Further to this, all the pit falls, quirks and unexpected situations that running a class can bring.
Understanding that most people doing the course would need to fit in with their current lives and existing work commitments was also in our thinking, so going up to London would be a challenge. Guildford seemed like the perfect location! It’s an investment, not only of your time but financially so students needed to start teaching straight away and have an accessible location.
I am also a great believer in accountability for people I am training in class, but also for myself! Which is why I went to great lengths to get the course endorsed via leading governing body; ActiveIQ and the Guildford studio accredited through CPD. Ensuring our Pilates Teacher Training Course and Centre was of the highest standard and held accountable externally. Something that a lot of Reformer courses do not offer.
Whilst I was constructing this course, I could have made it more technical to indulge my ego, utilising all that education I have gone through. Filling it with loads of fancy terms and names slowing down the course needlessly and completely missing the point. I have seen many a Pilates instructor with a greater education than I fail to pack out classes by being too stern, too serious, too educational and making the classes too stressful. Having the knowledge is important, just knowing when to use it is also important 😉
Also as this course is designed for established professionals, Students already have the knowledge so I don’t see the point of doubling up.
From my experience when I really simplify my sessions and terminology, explain everything so people connect with it straight away, sessions are far more enjoyable for those attending. People do Pilates to escape, have fun and also get a really cracking result. Not to feel like they are at school having to learn something they pay the instructor to know or be a platform for an instructor to demonstrate their knowledge. Classes should be fun, light and breezy but if they do what you ask they will get a result and it’s enough that we know why.
So those are a few of the reasons, but the main motivator is I just love teaching, so why not teach teachers to teach one of the best forms of exercise in the world. So we are an intake in, I ABSOLUTLEY loved every minute, learnt loads from my students and can’t wait to do the next one!
